Project Updates

Wheatland Housing Management Body (WHMB) is continually seeking funding opportunities for the New Build. We are excited to have identified two possibilities in 2026!

  • As expected, the 2026 Affordable Housing Partnership Program (AHPP) has been re-opened by the Government of Alberta (GOA). This year, the GOA is allocating $200 million dollars toward affordable housing.

  • The WHMB Board of Directors recently passed a motion to enhance and re-submit the AHPP application, together with and Wheatland and Area Hospice Society (WAHS).

  • In addition, the Government of Canada has opened a new program, Build Canada Homes, which will replace the CMHC Affordable Housing Fund. This program has allocated one billion dollars toward affordable housing in 2026.

  • To better assess this opportunity, WHMB has invited the municipalities to an information session on January 6, 2026.

  • The session will provide an update on project progress and address the impact of fund stacking with provincial and federal funding programs.

  • We look forward to discussing the role of the municipalities and what support would be required to help advance the project in relation to funding and financing applications.

  • As always, WHMB will continue to provide public updates on Facebook, LinkedIn and our website we navigate this journey!

Wheatland Housing Management Body would like to inform our community, partners, and stakeholders that our recent application to the Government of Alberta’s Affordable Housing Partnership Program (AHPP)—Third Intake—was not selected for funding.

  • This round of AHPP funding saw overwhelming interest, with 113 applications submitted by 96 organizations from across Alberta. The high demand underscores the urgent and growing need for innovative, collaborative solutions to support vulnerable Albertans through affordable housing. We are awaiting feedback on our proposal to better understand how we might strengthen future submissions.

  • While we are disappointed in the outcome, we remain steadfast in our commitment to addressing housing needs in our community. We appreciate the opportunity to have been considered, and we extend our sincere thanks to the Government of Alberta for their continued support of affordable housing initiatives.

  • We are actively exploring alternative funding options, including future AHPP intakes and potential federal opportunities through the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC). We remain hopeful and determined to move our project forward with the support of community partners and funders.

  • We extend our heartfelt thanks to all who supported our application and continue to work with us in advancing affordable housing solutions. We will provide further updates as we continue to pursue funding and development opportunities.

  • For more information or to discuss partnership opportunities, please contact: Glenn Koester – WHMB Board Chair

Thank you for your continued support.

Thank you to our Building Committee team and everyone in the community who is working to make this project possible.

  • Many applications were submitted to AHPP. After careful review, we have been reassured that our project is impressive and sound in its planning, management, and financial considerations. Given the strong uptake in the program, evaluations were highly competitive and not all projects were able to receive funding.

  • This may be a ‘no’ for now, but it is not forever.  A great amount of time and energy has been invested in our Build Project.  In the letter from Assistant Deputy Minister David Williams, he encourages WHMB to re-submit for a future funding intake.  The next phase of grant selection will likely be very soon.

  • In the meantime, WHMB and WAHS building committees continue to push forward.  We intend to prepare our project to a Class A level “shovels in the ground” budget to put our best foot forward to all funding agencies, especially CMHC.  AB Housing has indicated to us that only projects which have reached this shovel ready level of planning will be considered for future consideration of an AHPP grant.

  • Thank you to the municipal councils who have advanced their committed funds to WHMB as we proceed with our work, however frustrating the slow pace may be.  Shared values and principles on large projects by both our provincial and municipal governments help diminish overall risk and promote sustainability and reflect our strength of character.

WHMB submitted its grant application to the Affordable Housing Partnership Program (the provincial grant) on October 16. Alberta’s AHPP brings together partners from public, private, and non-profit organizations to provide affordable housing where it is needed most, by providing up to 1/3 of projected housing costs. The application intake is now closed, review is occurring, and successful grants will be announced in early 2024.

  • WHMB next action is expediting its CMHC application by preparing a Class B budget with its partners and contractors. If approval of AHPP occurs, application to CMHC for funds (the mortgage) can then proceed immediately.

  • WHMB is hopeful and excited about the Build Project progress thus far. We would like to share our extensive project developments, including scale models and design particulars, with you. We plan to share this with you early in 2024, once we’re notified of AHPP application results.

We’ve assembled and finalized our expert team that moves us even closer to a start date for our new lodge project.  The team includes an architect, project management, and construction management firms.

  • By October 1, this team will have finalized the Class C project estimate and prepared all documents needed for submission to the AAHP grant (Alberta Affordable Housing Program).

  • This grant deadline is October 16 with a 90-day review period. While waiting for this funding approval, our team will continue to work on further design and development.
